Purchase of Hearing Aids is a Major Investment!

That's why we present "Living with Hearing Loss," a series of classes on getting the most out of your hearing aids.

You probably wouldn't try to drive a car for the first time or operate your new computer without some training or help. At the Hearing & Speech Institute, we believe that better hearing requires more than just purchasing a product. To help our clients enjoy the best possible benefit from their hearing aids and positively cope with the challenges of hearing loss, our audiology staff offers a series of classes at no charge.

We offer four classes on a rotating basis, covering a wide range of topics. Classes are intended not only for the hearing aid user or prospective user, but also spouses, partners and family members.

Class 1:
Everything You Ever (Or Never) Wanted to Know About Hearing Aids

  • Hearing aid technology

  • How to be an informed and intelligent consumer

  • Various types of hearing aid technology and how they work

  • Programmable, digital, directional or multiple memories

  • What is the right hearing aid for you?

  • How to care for your hearing aids

Class 2:
What to Expect from Hearing Aids

  • The hearing mechanism, how it works and what happens when it is damaged

  • What you can expect from hearing aids (and what you can't)

  • Learn more about your hearing loss and what to expect during the first few weeks of using your hearing aids

Class 3:
Beyond Hearing Aids - Managing Your Hearing Loss

  • Information about the use of speech reading (lip reading) and other visual cues

  • Coping strategies for both the person with the hearing loss and his or her family members

  • What to do when communication breaks down

  • Ways to optimize your listening environment

Class 4:
Resources for Living with Hearing Loss

  • Technology that can enhance your life

  • Assistive devices to help you hear better at church, in a theatre, etc.

  • How to communicate better on the phone

  • Hands-on demonstrations with some of these devices

  • Other resources in our community, state and nation

How Do I Sign Up?

You can sign up for this series of classes by calling one of our patient coordinators at 503-228-6479. Classes are held at the Hearing & Speech Institute. Classes are presented in sequence—one on each of four consecutive weeks. If you miss one, you can always pick it up on the next rotation.

Classes are designed to encourage a relaxed group atmosphere. Questions and discussion are welcome. There will be time at the end of each class to visit with other group members and ask the audiologist questions on an individual basis.
